One of Thomasville's gems, First Presbyterian Church Thomasville has played a key role in the Spark vision. Our city is so privileged to have so many generous congregations like them. Can I tell you their story?
In 2017, First Presbyterian Church Thomasville (FPC) embarked on a strategic planning process that led to a vision to support underestimated entrepreneurs in Thomasville.
Inspired by the teachings of one of Pastor Tim Filston's mentors, Bob Lupton, an expert in equitable development, FPC recognized the importance of addressing barriers faced by minority business owners. These included such things as limited access to capital, education gaps, and lack of supportive networks.
In the wake of a tragic shooting that highlighted racial tensions, FPC joined forces with local leaders Pastor Denny Blake, Pastor Ricky Monroe, and Bryan Watt, to form a coalition dedicated to fostering positive change.
With Bob Lupton’s guidance, the coalition identified the neighborhood surrounding Harper Elementary School as a focal point for their efforts.
One of the leaders discovered the LAUNCH model in Chattanooga and invited them to Thomasville to conduct a workshop. This pivotal event planted the seeds for what would become Spark Thomasville, a business incubator dedicated to empowering underestimated entrepreneurs through education, coaching, and access to affordable capital.
Today, FPC is a proud partner with Spark Thomasville, embodying the values of collaboration, community engagement, and a commitment to loving their neighbors.
Through their generous support and collaborative efforts, FPC plays a pivotal role in igniting a spark that is empowering aspiring business leaders, creating jobs, fostering economic viability and generational wealth-building within the community.
